If we are truly honest, most of us post amazing pictures on social media, not because they accurately represent our lives, but because they represent the lives we wish we were living. Even the real pictures, those happy candid rare moments we sometimes capture, don’t accurately reflect the more enduring reality that makes up our lives. Add the shocking array of filters out there and we can make almost anything look like the stuff that dreams are made of.
The day in and day out, the sleepless nights, the worry, the arguments, the struggling marriages, the broken hearted, the lonely, the grieving, the financial fears, the real humanness we experience, hides in the shadows, while we portray a very different polished picture to the world.
It is baffling that all of us feel it and almost all of us hide it. I can’t help but wonder what would happen if we all told the truth? What if we created “face-off book”, where we took the “face” off and showed the magical depths of our realness. The whole world would breathe a deep audible sigh of relief, loud enough to be heard on the moon and shake the heavens. I imagine heaven would applaud our realness. In the energy of such honesty and truth, we could spontaneously heal the visible and invisible wounds that keep us tethered to a life of merely surviving.
So, how do we get there? How do we get to a life of living? How do we find ‘happy’ in the midst of struggle? How do we walk out of our prisons and into our freedom? Tell the truth. First, tell yourself the truth and then tell someone else. Come out of the shadows. Take the “face-off” and shine, as you are, because you do. It’s those scars, those insecurities, those judgements screaming in your head, that make you human and more over, it’s those places that make us all the same. That sameness is where the ‘happy’ lives.
Pain, fear, depression, anxiety–tells us our darkness is different, crazy, that people would reject us if they knew. And you know what, some people might – but they will be the very people who feel just as we do, but are too afraid to say it. Ridicule and judgment come from the shadows. Light shines out in the wide open.
If you want to be happy, if you want to be free, if you want to LIVE…. then tell the truth. Life isn’t easy, but it much much harder alone. Invite somebody into your realness and watch what happens, at the very least, what happens to you.
